Women make up nearly half of the global workforce, yet they continue to carry the lion’s share of unpaid labor. Despite these challenges, they are breaking barriers and reshaping society.
Women hold the world together. From nurturing families to driving economies, leading communities, and innovating in workplaces, their contributions are essential. But here’s the catch—women can only fulfill these roles effectively when their own wellbeing is prioritized. Today, the need for women to support women has never been greater.
Women: The Backbone of Society
From the moment a child is born, a woman is usually the first to nurture, guide, and educate. Across the globe, women serve as primary caregivers, not just within their families but within entire communities. They play crucial roles in healthcare, education, and grassroots leadership. In many developing nations, they are also responsible for food production and preparation, sustaining both their families and local economies.
Economically, women are powerhouses. They make up a significant portion of the workforce, particularly in agriculture and informal entrepreneurship, playing a key role in sustaining economic wellbeing. Their contributions to household incomes and national economies are undeniable. And yet, despite their immense influence, women still juggle an exhausting list of responsibilities—balancing careers, caregiving, and personal aspirations, all while battling societal expectations.
Breaking Barriers: Women in Leadership and STEM
Women are not just participating in the workforce; they are breaking barriers in fields once dominated by men. More women than ever are securing leadership roles in politics, academia, STEM, and corporate boardrooms. As of 2024, women make up nearly 10% of Fortune 500 CEOs, a record high but still a stark underrepresentation. Women are also leading groundbreaking scientific research, achieving tenure in academia, and making strides in politics, influencing policies that shape society.
Despite these achievements, women remain underrepresented in executive leadership, earn less than their male counterparts, and often face systemic biases in career advancement. Yet, each milestone reached by a woman in these fields paves the way for future generations, proving that persistence, advocacy, and support networks can help break the glass ceiling.
Wellbeing: The Secret Weapon for Success
Science backs it up—women who are psychologically and physically well are better equipped to thrive in multiple roles. Studies show that when women are employed and supported, they experience improved health outcomes, thanks to financial independence and social support. Psychological wellbeing also improves when women find fulfillment in their roles. However, stress associated with role fulfillment can take a toll.
This is where community and connection become lifesavers. Support networks—whether through friendships, mentorships, communities of practice, or workplace policies—help women cope with the demands of daily life. Engaging with nature and community projects also boosts mental health, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic when many women turned to outdoor activities for emotional resilience.
Women Supporting Women: More Important Than Ever
It’s 2025, and we still see disparities in pay, leadership opportunities, and expectations placed on women. But today’s challenges extend beyond the workplace. Women in the U.S. face increasing erosions of their rights, from restrictions on reproductive healthcare to economic inequities and barriers to leadership. For marginalized women, these disparities are even more pronounced. These setbacks threaten not just individual women but the progress of society as a whole.
An antidote? Women lifting each other up. Mentorship, advocacy, and simply showing up for one another create ripples of change. Support also means pushing for policies that benefit all women—paid family leave, accessible childcare, and gender equity in leadership. When women support each other, workplaces become more inclusive, families stronger, and communities healthier.
So, this International Women’s Day, let’s do more than celebrate—let’s advocate, mentor, and uplift women in our circles. Let’s commit to being the kind of women who build others up, who fight for work-life balance, fair wages, and accessible healthcare. Because when women thrive, society thrives. And that’s a win for everyone.
